Congratulations to the over 2,300 Special Olympics athletes, coaches and volunteers who participated in the 2008 Special Olympics Wisconsin Outdoor Sports Tournament, held August 2-3 in Eau Claire.
Competition in bocce, golf, tennis, softball and tee ball took place all day Saturday and Sunday at the UW-Eau Claire campus, Hickory Hills Golf Course and North High School. Between games athletes could stop by the Healthy Athletes tent to receive free dental and foot exams as well as general fitness and nutritional advice from statewide health professionals. After competition on Saturday, athletes had the opportunity to relax and have fun at a luau-themed dance held at the Eau Claire Indoor Sports Center. Athletes qualified for the Outdoor Sports Tournament based on their performance at local, regional or district tournaments.

Special Olympics Wisconsin Statewide Mission Partner Kwik Trip, Inc. recently purchased and commissioned the construction of a specialty ‘chopper’-style motorcycle, made of 100% Wisconsin parts, to be raffled off for $5 a ticket with all proceeds going to Special Olympics Wisconsin.

Pepsi® once again teamed up with Special Olympics Wisconsin to hold its 3rd Annual Pepsi-WAL-MART softball classic. The event was held on Aug. 13 at Helfaer Park Little League Diamond in Miller Park’s Parking Lot. The ever popular Klements Sausages made an appearance, and the singing of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” echoed in the stands as hundreds of attendees cheered for one of the eight Special Olympics softball teams from Milwaukee and around the state that played throughout the day.
New this year was the winning ticket chosen from thousands of raffle tickets bought in the last couple months for a 2008 Harley Davidson, Model XL 12OOL in black with a single Axle Utilities trailer, valued at over $11,000. A check was presented to Special Olympics Wisconsin for $65,000 in Cash and in-kind contributions from Pepsi.
