Basic
Emergency Medical Care session offered through distance learning
Special
Olympics Wisconsin
held its first distance learning re-certification session last month. The session, titled
Basic Emergency Medical Care for Athletes was attended by 34 coaches between four
sites located in Pewaukee, Wausau, Fall Creek and Superior. Thank you to Pat Lacke, a State
Games Medical Committee member, for presenting the session.
“This
was the best Special Olympics session I have ever been to," said a coach who attended the
training. "It was so interesting because the speaker knew by personal experience what we
deal with and told us great ways to handle situations. It was a very practical & informative
session!” the coach added.

UW
Oshkosh adopts Special Olympics curriculum
SOWI
is excited to announce we are offering the Special Olympics North America (SONA) University
Curriculum at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Through the curriculum, universities
assist with the training of coaches, sport managers and event volunteers and students participate
in service learning opportunities.
This
partnership between UW Oshkosh and SOWI will stimulate growth, interest and understanding
of Special Olympics and general sports management through shared staff and material resources.
UW Oshkosh is the 15th university in the US to offer this curriculum.

Another
successful Athletes as Coaches workshop held
While
Agency Managers from Indianhead Area were gathered in Eau Claire at their fall meeting,
six athletes and their mentors were also in Eau Claire attending an Athletes As Coaches
(AAC) workshop. Kasey Clark, James Krause, Brandon Drinkman, Jennifer Richter, Pam Gilbert
and Jeffry Johnson came one step closer to fulfilling their dreams of becoming coaches.
They
will follow this workshop by attending a sports-specific training school in the sport of
their choice and then complete a practicum of hands-on coaching (with a mentor) for one
sports season. We wish them well as they make the transition from athlete to coach, and
look forward to their leadership in SOWI.
