Overcast and rainy skies didn’t stop nearly 1,000 Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) athletes from winning big at the 2013 SOWI State Indoor Sports Tournament (IST) on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Hundreds of coaches, volunteers and fans cheered on SOWI athletes competing in team basketball, basketball skills and gymnastics.

United States Department of Education Guidance Calls for Leveling the Playing Field for Students with Disabilities

MADISON, Wis. – On January 25, 2013, the United States Department of Education (DOE) released new guidance to schools and school systems throughout the nation that receive federal aid about the requirements of providing quality sports opportunities for students with disabilities. While the guidance does not make new law, it does identify the responsibilities that schools and school systems have under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. After months of rigorous training and preparation, five Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) athletes and coaches are ready to make their way to the most spectacular sporting event this year – the 2013 World Winter Games to be held in South Korea on January 29 – February 5. Before their departure, SOWI will host a send-off celebration in their honor on Wednesday, January 23 at Special Olympics Wisconsin Headquarters Board Room, located at 2310 Crossroads Drive in Madison, WI 53715.

Special Olympics Wisconsin Cancels State Winter Games Snowshoe Racing and CC Skiing

Due to lack of snow and facility conditions at Nine Mile Forest in Wausau, Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) will cancel snowshoe racing and cross-country skiing competitions scheduled to be held for nearly 200 athletes at the SOWI State Winter Games this weekend, Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20, 2013. SOWI will cancel the Opening Ceremonies and dance Saturday evening due to the decreased number in attendance. Special Olympics Wisconsin investigated every alternative means to hold the snowshoe racing and cross-country skiing competitions, but was unable to identify a safe option.
