Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) athlete, Daniel Janulewicz, 22, is like many young men his age. He’s a baseball junkie, a basketball fanatic, a team player, and doesn’t make medical appointments a priority.

On Thursday, May 30, students with and without intellectual disabilities from more than 20 statewide middle and high schools will gather in Madison for SOWI’s Annual Spring Youth Activation Summit. The Youth Activation Summit is one component of Project UNIFY® --a program which activates youth to promote school communities where all young people are agents of change, fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities.

On December 27, 2012, Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) athlete and Boy Scout Troop 300 member, Blake Anderson, received the highest honor in Scouting – the rank of Eagle Scout. Since joining the troop in March 2009, Anderson has advanced quickly, taking on many difficult tasks that are required to advance through six Boy Scout ranks.

Nearly 870 athletes struck down pins and spiked volleyballs at the 2012 Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) Fall Sports Tournament on Saturday, December 1, 2012. The Northern tournament took place at Dale’s Weston Lanes in Wausau while the Southern tournament was held at AMF Bowlero Lanes in Wauwautosa and the Center Court Complex in Waukesha. Approximately 140 Agencies and 300 volunteers and coaches participated in the weekend’s competition.

On Saturday, September 1, approximately 30 Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) athletes, coaches, staff members and supporters from the Madison area boarded the FOX Sports Wisconsin Fan Express and made their way to Miller Park, where they were greeted by none other than Bernie Brewer before the Milwaukee Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates game at Miller Park. Athletes not only had the opportunity to spend time with their favorite mascot, they also each received a special drawstring knapsack and a pair of sunglasses.

With less than 100 days to go before the Opening Ceremonies, athletes, coaches, and supporters are getting ready for the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea to be held on January 29-February 5, 2013.
