Recycle for Special Olympics Quick Facts
• According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 130 million cell phones are
discarded each year. Recycling cell phones will keep hazardous materials out of landfills
and reduce the need for raw materials for new cell phones.
• Special Olympics will receive between $1 and $100 for each phone recycled through
this program, depending on its make and model.
• It is estimated that for every three phones that are recycled one Special Olympics
Wisconsin athlete can compete in one sports season.
• Cell phones will be sent to RMS Communications, a leading cell phone recycling
company, where they will be reset to their original manufacturer’s settings, deleting
any existing personal data on the phone. The cell phones are then refurbished for resale,
recycled or donated to organizations as 911 phones.
• The average life of a cell phone is only 18 months. Currently only one percent
of cell phones are recycled.
