Special Olympics Wisconsin Awarded American Family Insurance Grant

May 24, 2016

On May 4, 2016, the American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation awarded Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) with a $30,000 grant to support three Healthy Athletes disciplines: FUNFitness, Health Promotions, and Medfest.

Through the Healthy Athletes program, SOWI athletes receive free screenings and health evaluations to help improve their health and fitness. FUNFitness, Health Promotions and Medfest events provide a snapshot of an athlete’s health, as well as tools and information to help athletes maintain and promote good health. The data collected from these events includes height and weight, flexibility, bone health and more.

“The funds from the American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation will help us tremendously in growing the FUNFitness, Health Promotions and Medfest disciplines. Our goal is to reach as many athletes as possible, but also to educate coaches and health care professionals about the needs and care of individuals with intellectual disabilities,” said SOWI’s Director of Health Programs, Melissa Schoenbrodt.

SOWI has emerged as a leading public health organization for individuals with intellectual disabilities, on average providing more than 2,000 health screenings annually. The American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation and SOWI share a common goal of building healthy communities.

“The American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation is proud to support Special Olympics Wisconsin’s (SOWI) Healthy Athletes program,” said Judd Schemmel, Community Investment Director at American Family Insurance. “SOWI’s programs inspire and enable individuals with intellectual disabilities to become their best selves. As such, these programs align strongly with the Dreams Foundation giving priorities. Good luck to all the Special Olympics athletes that will be taking part in the upcoming Summer Games.”

SOWI would like to thank the American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation for supporting more than 10,000 athletes and enabling them to experience joy, confidence, and health through sports and competition.
