This week we hear from 2018 USA Games Delegate Michael Poll from Whitefish Bay! When Michael found out he was going to the USA Games, his reaction can only bring joy and a smile to your face. His letter-opening video has racked up more than 86,000 views on WISN 12 News’ Facebook page after they ran a fantastic story on himĀ last month!

How and when did you become involved with SOWI?
I became involved with SOWI in 1985 through St. Francis Children’s Center.

What sport(s) do you participate in and what is your favorite sport?
I play many different sports! Volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball and bowling for fun. My favorite is basketball.

What do you like most about being involved with SOWI?
I like my friendships, training for the tournaments, going to the tournaments, and having nice coaches.

Tell us about one of your favorite memories with SOWI.
My favorite memories are the 1995 (tennis) and 1999 (volleyball) World Games. It was fun to go on the plane and spend time with my friends and meet new people from other countries. I was even able to play tennis with Monica Seles!

How would your life be different if you never joined SOWI?
I would miss participating in sports and being with friends I’ve known for many years.

Why do you think other people should get involved with SOWI?
I think they would have a great time, meet new friends and exercise. It’s fun to stay away from home during some of the tournaments.

Anything else you would like to share?
My friends made a bobblehead of me and sold them with proceeds going to North Suburban Special Olympics. Also the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Men’s Baseball team made a t-shirt with my picture on it and gave those proceeds to North Suburban. I help the sports teams at UWM and they have created a special “Michael Poll Spirit Award” given out at their annual student athlete awards banquet. And Mayor Barrett of Milwaukee proclaimed a Michael Poll Day a few years ago.
