UW-Stout Chief of Police to Carry Flame of Hope along Great Wall of China
University of Wisconsin-Stout Chief of Police Lisa Walter has been selected to represent Wisconsin this fall as part of the Final Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) for Special Olympics in China. Beginning in Beijing, Walter will join other officers from around the world in carrying the Flame of Hope throughout China and finally delivering it to Shanghai to kick off the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games.
Walter will depart for China September 23. She will run along historic parts of the Great Wall of China on her portion of the Final Leg. The torch will arrive in Shanghai on October 2 for the opening ceremonies at the 80,000 seat Shanghai Stadium. Law enforcement officers are selected for the honor of running the global Final Leg based on their significant involvement with Special Olympics.
Walter has worked for the UW-Stout Police Department for 14 years and has been involved in the LETR for Special Olympics Wisconsin for 11. She volunteers her time at local competitions and fundraisers. In 2004 she was awarded the honor of Citizen of the Year by the Indianhead Area Special Olympics and in 2005 she was inducted into the Wisconsin LETR Dale Brunner Hall of Fame, an honor reserved for those who significantly contribute to the success of Wisconsin’s LETR.
This global Final Leg aims to spread the message of Special Olympics and highlight the abilities of athletes to millions throughout China. Their impact promises to be vast—the combined population of all cities in which LETR legs and ceremonies will be held is 68.4 million.
