Introducing the Sun Run & Solar Plunge

March 30, 2021 Blog, Events

We are excited to announce the debut of our new Sun Run & Solar Plunge series this summer!

As COVID-19 cases continue to trend down and vaccination numbers increase, people are going to be hungry to get outside and celebrate the end of a difficult year in epic fashion. The Sun Run & Solar Plunge will be the perfect way to guarantee this will be the best summer ever.

So come join us for some fun to support Special Olympics Wisconsin athletes and celebrate our Young Athletes program!

Special Olympics Wisconsin’s newest event will have something for everyone. For our dedicated supporters who missed plunging into icy water this winter due to our COVID-related changes to the Polar Plunge, you’ll be able to make up for it by taking our Solar Plunge into chilly beach water or an icy pool. Participants will also have the chance to run or walk the 5k Sun Run. There will be options to do both events or pick just one. The events are family friendly, with kid runs, food and socially distant activities for all to enjoy!  For those that would prefer to not participate in person, there will be a virtual option as well!

Partnering with the plunge and run experts

After a year in which we couldn’t hold our traditional Polar Plunge due to COVID-19, we’re excited to give Special Olympics fans another opportunity to show support for the 9,000+ athletes across the state. For this new event, we’ll once again be collaborating with our mission partners from the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics Wisconsin.

Having helped organize events like the Polar Plunge and Run With The Cops over the years, the LETR have truly established themselves as the plunge and run experts.

“We’re extremely excited at the opportunity to work with Special Olympics Wisconsin on the new Sun Run & Solar Plunge,” said Monona Police Department Community Relations Officer and LETR member, Nate Reynolds. “This new event will be a memorable day for everyone involved.”

With six Sun Run & Solar Plunge locations across the state, there’s sure to be one for you.

Our athletes need your help now more than ever

Donations raised in the Sun Run & Solar Plunge will support more than 9,000 Special Olympics Wisconsin athletes across the state. 19 Olympic-style sports are typically offered year-round. Fitness programming and select sports competitions continue to be held during the pandemic in creative, safe and sometimes virtual ways.

We also provide critical healthcare to our athletes through our Healthy Athletes programming. Through our cutting-edge leadership trainings and collaborations with schools around the state, we are working to create more inclusive schools and communities.

During the Sun Run & Solar Plunge series we will also be showcasing our Young Athletes program, an innovative and inclusive sport and play program for children ages 2 – 10 years old with and without intellectual disabilities.

This impact wouldn’t be possible without support from fans like you through events like the Sun Run & Solar Plunge. Registration will be opening soon so mark your calendars and keep an eye out for more information!
