Basketball “bounced” its way into competition at the 1968 Special Olympics World Games and has grown to include over 69,000 athletes from the US Program and 40 countries. As one of the world’s most popular sports, basketball is a favorite among athletes. Special Olympics basketball teaches teamwork and skills of the game.

Athletes compete in individual skills contests. These events are designed for the lower ability athletes.

Basketball Skills Key Changes

  1. Level 1 Skills Minimum Standards: An athlete will need to have a minimum total score of 5 points or more in order to compete at the District/Regional Basketball Skills Competition. An athlete will need to have received a minimum score of 10 points or more in order to advance to the State Basketball Skills Competition.
