“The Barron County program is like a big family. We help each other during the year. The coaches, teammates and families care about each other.”

After a brief hiatus, we’re back with My SOWI Story! This week we hear from 2018 USA Games swimmer Cindy Dexter of Barron!

How and when did you become involved with SOWI?
I have been part of the Barron County Special Olympics program for 35 years. I started competing in track when I was 10 years old. My two younger sisters also competed with me. Since then, I then added swimming, bowling, softball, and basketball to my list of sports.

What sport(s) do you participate in and what is your favorite sport?
I participate in swimming, bowling, softball and basketball. I like all of the sports because I get to compete with my friends. I like swimming the best because I can compete in individual as well as team events. I like the exercise and now I get to participate with my twin daughters.

What do you like most about being involved with SOWI?
I like meeting new people and having fun with my friends at practices and competitions. My cousin from Portage is also involved in Special Olympics. I always like to see my cousin, aunt and uncle at events. The Barron County program is like a big family. We help each other during the year. The coaches, teammates and families care about each other. I also like that my daughters used to cheer for me and now I can cheer for them!

What is your favorite SOWI memory?
My favorite memory is showing my daughters, Kaylee and Chance, how fun swimming is. They would come and practice with us when they were little. It was GREAT when they were old enough to join the team. Kaylee has been involved for 3 years and Chance just started. This year we will be able to compete on a swim relay together and also be on the same team in other sports.

How would your life be different if you never joined SOWI?
If I were not in Special Olympics I wouldn’t have made as many great friends. I have fun helping others as a mentor and team captain.

Why do you think other people should get involved with SOWI?
Other people should get involved because it is fun, good exercise, a stress reliever, a way to meet new people and a way for families to do things together.
