April Brings Showers of Athletes to Oshkosh for the State Indoor Sports Tournament

February 24, 2014

Nearly 900 basketball players and gymnasts will travel across the state to attend the Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) State Indoor Sports Tournament at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh April 4-6, 2014.

This is an exciting year for the State Indoor Sports Tournament (IST), as many exciting new events and activities are being added to the schedule.

The fun begins Friday night with dinner, an Opening Ceremony, a Parade of Athletes, and entertainment. Saturday kicks off with a healthy start as SOWI CEO, Dennis Alldridge, invites athletes to join him for breakfast in Blackhawk Commons.

Saturday evening events will include: team basketball games against visiting Special Olympics Minnesota teams, a gymnastics exhibition featuring Team Wisconsin gymnasts who will compete at the Special Olympics USA Games, and finally, a special “Meet the Games Management Team” event for athletes only, providing a time to ask questions and get to know the key volunteers who help make the State Tournament happen. A 70’s themed dance will follow the gymnastics exhibition Saturday night from 7 p.m.-9 p.m.

Medical professionals will be on-site Saturday in the Gruenhagen to complete free eye, ear, dental and fitness screenings as part of Special Olympics Healthy Athletes®. This is open to all athletes; athletes do not need to be competing at IST to participate. For more information, contact Melissa at mschoenbrodt@specialolympicswisconsin.org or (608)442-5676.
